Real Madrid Shirt History

Since the invention of the beautiful and popular soccer game, team support and loyalty has always been associated with the clubs uniform, mainly the shirt. Consequently, renewing the team’s shirt serves just as equally in renewing the fans’ support spirit as well. Many clubs have done this many times and Real Madrid is no exception. The club is currently one of the best soccer clubs in the world and the shirt is a sight to reckon with through the many fans that will be seen wearing the same, other than the players.

The history of Real Madrid’s shirt dates back to when the club was founded in 1902. Initially, the clubs uniform was to be in two designs, one for the ordinary matches and the other one for the special matches. In both cases, the shirt was always white, only the shorts and the socks had variations.

Since then up to what the team has today, the Real Madrid shirts has undergone many changes and this did not just happen overnight but rather, there were a series of events. In 1904, the City of Madrid came into the shirt’s picture with its symbol being added to the crest. Seven years later, the Spanish flag was removed and blue was adopted for the tights. In 1914, knots were added to the collar. The Spanish giants were then crowned with the royal crown but this was later removed in 1931 due to political reasons. This was culminated by the addition of a purple sash. The civil war of 1942 in Spain had an effect not just on people’s lives, but also on the Real Madrid’s shirt as well, since the crest became reinstated on it once more.

During the 1950s, the club’s shirt acquired a new look with this time round the collar losing its knots. The replacement to this was a circular collar, and it happened in 1952. The shirt’s flavor however, lasted until the 1980s when the wind of change blew again.

The change that came in the 1980s was somewhat different from the previous changes to the shirt. This was due to the fact that this time round, trademarks and logos not belonging to many clubs’ uniforms started being included on the same, and by this I am talking about shirt sponsorships. Many Companies scrambled for the sponsorship of European soccer clubs in the 1980s for marketing reasons and Real Madrid was no exception. The first company to sponsor the club and consequently have their name/trademark on the Real Madrid’s shirt was Zanussi in 1982. It was later to be followed by Parmalot and then Reny Picot. All these changes happened in the 1980s.

In 2002, Real Madrid soccer club celebrated its centenary and the shirt could not be spared in ushering in the new feeling of historical change amongst the fans. The shirt of the same year was purely white. To reconnect the fans with the past, all sponsorship was removed so that the classic all white came into the limelight again, basically going back to its roots.
